OpenAI, the brains behind ChatGPT, is chatting with chip designers, including Broadcom, about creating a brand new AI chip, according to a report from The Information. They\u2019re thinking about making their own AI chips to tackle the shortage of pricey GPUs, which are crucial for developing AI models like ChatGPT, GPT-4, and DALL-E3.<\/p>\n
To make this happen, the Microsoft-backed company is bringing on board former Google employees who helped create Google\u2019s own AI chip, the Tensor Processing Unit. They\u2019ve decided to develop an AI server chip, according to three insiders.<\/p>\n
An OpenAI spokesperson told The Information, “We’re having ongoing conversations with industry and government stakeholders about boosting access to the infrastructure needed to make sure AI’s benefits are widely accessible.”<\/p>\n
Earlier this year, Bloomberg News reported that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman plans to raise billions of dollars to set up a network of factories to manufacture semiconductors.
